Start with Adhesive Nipple Covers, because they hold to your skin and most party dresses don't press a cover in place. Add boob tape only if the dress needs lift, and time it for the part of the night that matters, around three to four hours, since tape isn't an all-day product. Heavy fabrics like sequins and velvet hide edges and tape lines well, while thin satin and sheer sleeves are where the shade and the placement count.
Which dress needs which?
The cut decides most of it. Here's what goes under the party dresses we get asked about most.
| Dress | What goes under | What to skip |
|---|---|---|
| Open or low back | Adhesive Nipple Covers; boob tape if you want lift | Non-Adhesive covers; a sticky bra if the back dips below its cups |
| Strapless | Triangle Adhesive covers with the point turned down to the side, or round Adhesive covers if the neckline sits high; tape anchored low at the side for lift | Push-up inserts, unless the bodice has structured cups |
| Deep V or plunge | Triangle Adhesive covers turned to match the cut; tape run in a V for lift | Round covers that peek past the neckline; a sticky bra if the neckline drops below its center clasp |
| Sequins | Adhesive covers, plus tape if you want lift (a lined or heavier dress hides the strips) | Lingerie tape on the sequins themselves |
| Velvet | Adhesive covers, or Non-Adhesive if the dress is fitted all the way round | Lingerie tape on the pile |
| Satin slip | Adhesive covers in the shade closest to your chest | Boob tape, because one thin layer of satin shows the strips |
| Sheer sleeves, lace or mesh | Matte covers in the shade closest to your chest | Satin pasties under very sheer fabric |
Do sequins and velvet change anything?
Mostly in your favor. Heavier fabric hides what's underneath, so a lined sequin dress or a velvet bodice is one of the easiest places to wear boob tape. The strips and their creases don't show the way they do under one thin, skin-tight layer.
Where they make life harder is Invisible Lingerie Tape. It's double-sided tape for holding fabric to skin, and it grips smooth fabric well, but it's weaker on textured, heavy or oily surfaces, and sequins and velvet pile are both textured. The strip sits on the inside of the dress, so it holds best where that inside is a smooth lining or facing. A gaping neckline on an unlined sequin top is the one it may not save.
What about satin, slip dresses and sheer sleeves?
Satin is the fabric to plan around. A satin slip, backless or not, is one thin layer, and it shows the outline of each strip of tape and every crease in it. Under a slip, wear Adhesive Nipple Covers and leave the tape at home. If you want lift with an open back, a dress in a heavier fabric like crepe or velvet, a lined bodice or a flowy halter hides tape far better.
For sheer sleeves, lace panels or a mesh bodice, the cover's shade matters more than its shape. Pick the one closest to the skin on your chest, and go one shade lighter under white or pale fabric. Our five shades are Creme, Honey, Caramel, Cocoa and Mocha, and the shade guide shows who each one suits. Satin pasties aren't the right call under very sheer fabric, because their fabric edge can show.
How do I make it last from dinner to the last song?
Covers and tape run on different clocks. On clean, dry skin with no lotion or body oil, Adhesive covers hold all evening. They're waterproof and sweatproof, which helps in a hot, crowded room, and it's worth pressing the edges again after a lot of dancing. Take them off before bed.
Boob tape is extra strong, and its medical-grade adhesive grips harder the longer it's on, so keep it to around three to four hours. Cover each nipple first with an Adhesive cover, and never tape directly over it. If you've never worn tape before, patch test a small piece on the inside of your forearm a day or two ahead. It doesn't go on broken, irritated, sunburned or freshly shaved skin, so shaving that afternoon rules it out. To take it off, spray on Boob Tape Remover Oil, wait one to two minutes, then peel slowly, never dry. Our boob tape guide has the full method.
When won't this work?
- Non-Adhesive covers under an open back or anything loose. They rely on fitted fabric pressing them on, and a party dress rarely does that all the way round.
- A sticky bra on a heavier bust, or under a back that dips below its cups. Weight peels the edges, and the cups show.
- Push-up inserts in a dress with no structure. They need a bra, a corset or a structured bodice to sit in.
- Boob tape under one thin, clingy layer, or for a party that runs from noon to 2am. The strips show through thin fabric, and tape isn't made for that many hours.
- Lingerie tape on sequins or velvet pile. Stick it to a smooth lining or not at all.

FAQ
Can I wear a sticky bra under a holiday party dress?
Yes, if the back and the neckline both sit above its cups and center clasp, and your bust is small to medium. It gathers for cleavage but doesn't lift, and it comes in Creme only.
Will boob tape hold if I dance all night?
It holds through the part of the night that matters. Once it has set, most women wear it through a sweaty night out, so apply it to cool, dry skin a few minutes before you get moving. Plan on around three to four hours, not dinner to close.
What shade do I wear under a white or pale dress?
The shade closest to the skin on your chest, or one shade lighter under white and pale fabric. Matte silicone with thin edges does the rest.
What if the dress has a built-in bra or boning?
Then the dress has structure, so Extra-Boost Sticky Push Up Inserts work inside it if you want a fuller look, and any of our nipple covers work if you just want coverage.
